Padauk Wood Tiger

This is a tiger made of padauk wood.  Padauk is a deep red or orangy-red wood that gets darker as it oxidizes over time.  The wood is toxic and a dust mask must be worn when working with it.  Even with the dust mask and safety goggles, I always got a headache from using it.  The beautiful color sometimes makes it worth while, though.  I painted a backer board black and glued it on to suggest the tiger’s stripes.  This was one of my earlier works and is not as polished as some of the later ones, but it turned out pretty well.  I got the pattern from one of my woodworking magazines.
